In Berlin, a car drove into a crowd during a Christopher Street Day march in support of LGBT+ rights. The attack left a woman dead, 17 others injured, and police are searching for a 21-year-old suspect.

During one of Europe’s largest LGBT+ rights events, a car drove into a crowd near the march site. According to law enforcement, the driver abandoned the car and fled the scene after the crash.

Police have identified the suspect as 21-year-old Abdul B., who police say is linked to Berlin’s Islamist scene. According to Bild, he was previously under the radar of intelligence agencies and was released from a juvenile detention center in May 2026.

Law enforcement officials said that some of the victims were also stabbed during the attack. Three people are in critical condition. The festive procession was stopped early due to the incident, and an investigation is underway on suspicion of a terrorist attack.

Several thousand police officers were involved in the search for the suspect. The search was also extended to neighboring countries, including the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, France, Austria, Switzerland, the Czech Republic, Poland, and Denmark.

“What a terrible crime in Berlin. Hundreds of thousands of people from all over the world celebrated peacefully. They wanted us to treat each other with kindness and tolerance. This is an attack on our society,” said German Chancellor Friedrich Merz.

Berlin Mayor Kai Wegner said the tragedy was “an attack on a free and open society.”
