In Chernivtsi, the stairs on the central square were renovated with tombstones

In Chernivtsi, fragments of tombstones with portraits of deceased people were discovered during the repair of stairs on Philharmonic Square. The city council announced the start of an internal investigation into the circumstances of the use of these materials.

This was reported by the Chernivtsi City Council.

The situation was first noticed by social media users and deputies of the Chernivtsi City Council. In particular, deputy Oleksiy Kaspruk stated that the city’s central staircase was repaired using gravestones.

The information was later confirmed by city council member Yana Brus.

“Yes, it’s true! The stairs on Philharmonic Square were renovated with granite slabs with images of the deceased… For the city budget, by today’s standards, it didn’t cost that much – only some 190 thousand hryvnias,” said Yana Brus.

At the same time, the Chernivtsi City Council responded to the incident. The Department of Infrastructure and Improvement stated that this year, no major replacement of the slabs on the stairs was carried out, but only routine repairs were carried out.

“The stairs on the square in front of the Philharmonic were built about 20 years ago. There has been no major replacement of the slabs since then, only their repair. This year, the slabs were also only moved,” the Department of Infrastructure and Improvement of the Chernivtsi City Council reported.

The city council noted that they have launched an internal investigation to determine when and under what circumstances the tombstone fragments got into the staircase structure. They also promised to check the documentation, the origin of the materials and the work of the contractors, and if violations are found, to hold those responsible accountable.
