On Saturday, January 31, hundreds of Danish veterans gathered outside the U.S. Embassy in Copenhagen for a silent protest against the Trump administration’s threats against Greenland. The veterans said their wartime contributions were ignored and Denmark was humiliated.
This is reported by AP .
The action brought together veterans, many of whom served alongside American forces, in response to Trump’s comments about the possible annexation of Greenland and criticism of Denmark’s role in protecting Western interests in the Arctic.
“Denmark has always stood shoulder to shoulder with the US – and we have appeared in crisis zones around the world when the US has asked us to. We feel betrayed and ridiculed by the Trump administration, which is deliberately ignoring Denmark’s combat contribution shoulder to shoulder with the US,” the Danish Veterans & Veteran Support organization said in a statement.
The veterans first gathered at a monument honoring fallen Danish servicemen, then marched to the U.S. Embassy. There, they observed five minutes of silence – one minute for each of the branches of the Danish armed forces: the army, air force, navy, emergency services and police.
“It is impossible to describe in words how much it hurts us that Denmark’s contributions and sacrifices in the fight for democracy, peace, and freedom are being forgotten in the White House,” the veterans said.
Danish veterans have also expressed outrage at the White House’s rhetoric regarding Greenland’s right to self-determination and strongly deny claims of Denmark’s alleged inability to protect Western interests in the Arctic.
Forty-four Danish soldiers have died in Afghanistan, the highest per capita death toll among coalition forces, and another eight have died in Iraq, according to the organization.
Earlier, Western media reported that the US administration had abandoned the idea of a force scenario regarding Greenland due to the risk of impeachment of President Donald Trump. According to Reuters, since the beginning of January, Trump and representatives of his team have increasingly mentioned the possibility of using force regarding Greenland, both publicly and in private conversations.
Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte have agreed on a framework agreement to strengthen security in the Arctic, with a focus on Greenland. The agreement includes the deployment of US missiles, an expanded NATO presence and an economic component related to mineral extraction.
