In France, the largest nuclear power plant, Gravelines, has suspended operations due to a jellyfish invasion into the cooling system.
This was reported by EDF.
Four of the plant’s six power units were shut down on August 10 and 11 after a large number of jellyfish entered the cooling system. The reactors were shut down between 23:00 and 00:00 on Sunday night, and another unit at 06:20 on Monday.
Two more power units were undergoing scheduled maintenance and were not operating at the time of the jellyfish “attack”.
EDF explained that a large number of jellyfish blocked the filter drums of the pumping stations located in the non-nuclear part of the complex.
It is noted that the incident did not pose a threat to people, the environment, or the safety of the nuclear power plant. Diagnostics and technical work are currently underway to restart the power units.
The Gravelin NPP is one of the largest in Europe after the Zaporizhzhia NPP, providing a significant part of the region’s electricity supply.
