In Germany, AfD is negotiating with Gazprom to resume Russian gas supplies

The German Alternative for Germany party has confirmed talks with Russia’s Gazprom on the possible resumption of gas supplies from Russia to Germany. The AfD’s foreign policy representative, Markus Frohnmeier, personally discussed the issue with Gazprom’s head, Alexei Miller, in Moscow.

This was reported by DW with reference to the deputy chairwoman of the AfD faction in the Bundestag, Beatrix von Storch.

According to her, Frohnmeier met with Miller during his trip to Moscow and discussed the possibility of resuming energy trade between Russia and Germany.

Von Storch stated that the AfD is in favor of returning Russian gas to the German market, arguing this by the need to obtain affordable energy resources and have as many suppliers as possible.

“We believe that it is in our interests to receive supplies from Russia as well, which is why we are conducting these negotiations,” the party representative said.

Previously, AfD co-chair Alice Weidel also advocated the resumption of Russian gas imports. During a debate in the Bundestag on September 9, she stated that Germany needs cheap natural gas from Russia.

Von Storch also commented on the party’s position on Russia’s war against Ukraine. According to her, AfD supporters fear dragging Germany into war and do not support such a scenario.

At the same time, she emphasized that Germany’s foreign policy is determined by the federal government, and the results of elections in the federal states primarily reflect voters’ attitudes towards domestic politics.

As a reminder, according to exit polls, the AfD came first in the regional elections in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern , receiving 37% of the vote. The SPD received 35.5%, and the CDU – 5.5%.
