In Hungary, a drunk man hijacked a plane and flew it into the territory of a nuclear power plant

In Hungary, a 24-year-old man, while heavily intoxicated, hijacked a plane from the Kaloch airfield and headed towards the Paks nuclear power plant. The Hungarian military scrambled fighter jets to intercept the plane, after which the man made an emergency landing and was detained.

This was reported by the Hungarian police.

The incident occurred on the morning of August 29. The man tore out the fastening cables holding the plane, got into the cockpit, and was able to lift it into the air from the service road.

According to radar data, the plane was heading towards a 3-kilometer exclusion zone around the Paks nuclear power plant. After that, fighter jets were scrambled from the Kecskemet air base to intercept it.

The man eventually made a hard emergency landing in a sunflower field near the village of Gerien, about 20 kilometers from the nuclear power plant. The plane sustained damage to its landing gear.

After landing, the man left the plane and tried to take over the car of the driver who stopped to help. The police detained him.

According to preliminary information, the man suffered minor injuries. There are no other victims.

Following the incident, Hungarian aviation authorities and law enforcement began inspecting security systems at the country’s airfields.
