In June 2026, 144 people, including 35 children, died in bodies of water in Ukraine. This is more than three times the figure for the same period last year.
The State Emergency Service of Ukraine reported this.
For comparison, in June 2025, 90 people died in bodies of water, including 10 children.
The State Emergency Service recalled a number of tragic incidents that occurred last month. Specifically, on June 24, a man and his two sons, ages 7 and 8, died in the Dniester River in the Chernivtsi region. According to law enforcement, the children began drowning while swimming. The father rushed to their aid, but all three disappeared underwater. Their bodies were later found lifeless.
On the same day, in a second settlement in Bukovina, a 16-year-old boy drowned while swimming.
Another tragedy occurred on June 21 in Transcarpathia. Near the village of Getynya, the Tysa River carried a 10-year-old boy away. Rescuers discovered his body approximately four kilometers from where he disappeared.
The State Emergency Service urged Ukrainians to observe safety regulations in bodies of water. Rescuers recommend swimming only in designated areas, not leaving children unattended, not entering the water while intoxicated, and not overestimating one’s abilities.
