In Mali, armed groups carried out a series of coordinated attacks in the capital Bamako and other cities on April 25. The military reported fighting with the militants, indicating a sharp escalation in the security situation.
This is reported by Al Jazeera .
The army said the attacks targeted military installations in Bamako and other areas of the country. The military said it was fighting “terrorist groups” who had attacked barracks and infrastructure.
Two explosions were heard near the main military base of Kati near the capital shortly before 06:00, followed by intense gunfire. Similar incidents were reported simultaneously in Sevare, Kidal and the city of Gao.
“Shooting everywhere,” a witness said.
An Associated Press journalist in Bamako saw heavy weapons and automatic weapons fire near Modibo Keita International Airport, about 15 km from the city center. A helicopter was also patrolling the area.
Analyst Nicolas Hak said the scale and coordination of the attacks were unprecedented. He said the militants were operating simultaneously in different locations and were targeting military targets.
“This looks like an unprecedented level of coordination,” he said.
Mali has been in a state of armed instability for over 10 years, linked to the activities of groups affiliated with Al-Qaeda and the Islamic State, as well as rebellions in the north of the country.
After military coups in 2020 and 2021, the country’s authorities severed cooperation with France and withdrew foreign military missions. In 2023, Mali, together with Burkina Faso and Niger, created the Alliance of Sahel States to jointly fight armed groups.
