The incident occurred on the evening of November 1 in the state of Michoacan. According to preliminary data, at around 8:10 p.m., unknown assailants opened fire on the car in which the mayor was traveling. A 9mm pistol and several shell casings were recovered from the scene. One of the attackers was killed in the shootout, but his identity has not yet been established. City Council member Victor Hugo de la Cruz Saucedo was also injured, but his life is not in danger.

Michoacan’s chief prosecutor, Carlos Torres Piña, said two people suspected of involvement in the murder had already been arrested. State criminal investigators and prosecutors were involved in the investigation.

Carlos Manso has led the city of Uruapan since September 2024. The Michoacan region is known as one of the most dangerous in Mexico, where the New Generation of Jalisco and the New Family of Michoacan drug cartels are active.

The mayor’s killing comes just days after the killing of Bernardo Bravo, a lemon producer who had publicly reported threats from criminals. Mexican authorities see the events as an escalation of violence in the region.

Governor Alfonso Durazo and Mexican President Claudia Scheinbaum Pardo expressed their condolences to the families of the deceased and ordered a full investigation into the circumstances of the tragedy.
