In Nikopol, law enforcement officers detained a 23-year-old woman on suspicion of brutally beating her 10-year-old stepdaughter, resulting in the child’s death.
This was reported by Prosecutor General Ruslan Kravchenko .
According to investigators, on the evening of February 19, the girl was taken unconscious to the intensive care unit of Nikopol City Hospital. Doctors diagnosed her with a closed head injury and a coma. She died a few hours later.
Initially, on the way to the hospital, the stepmother claimed the child had fallen into the street. She later changed her story, explaining that she had gotten angry because the girl had taken her makeup, hit her, and then fallen and hit the floor.
However, according to the Prosecutor General, the nature of the injuries indicated systematic abuse. The child had numerous bruises and hematomas, lacerations from nails on his neck, and bruises of varying degrees of age.
The woman later admitted that she had used physical violence, explaining that her stepdaughter was disobedient and was not her biological child.
The father was at work at the time of the tragedy. He said he didn’t notice any signs of danger to his daughter. The family wasn’t registered with social services. Due to distance learning, the child’s condition also went unnoticed by teachers.
The woman has been charged under Part 2 of Article 121 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine—intentional grievous bodily harm resulting in the death of a child. Prosecutors are seeking pretrial detention.
In addition, criminal proceedings have been initiated under Article 166 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine for malicious failure to fulfill childcare obligations. Investigators are also investigating possible cases of torture.
The family also has two young children—a two-year-old boy and a four-year-old girl. According to law enforcement, their condition is satisfactory and they are currently with their father.
