At least 16 people have been killed and 57 wounded in an attack on a police compound in the northwestern Pakistani city of Kohat. A suicide bomber rammed a car packed with explosives into the compound’s fence before gunmen opened fire.
This is reported by Reuters .
At the time of the attack, police officers and their families were praying in a mosque on the premises of the complex. Five police officers were among the dead. After the explosion, seven attackers engaged in a gunfight with law enforcement officers. According to police, all attackers died in the explosion and subsequent gunfight.
The explosion destroyed part of the complex’s fence. Rescuers pulled the injured out of the rubble and took them to hospitals.
No one has yet claimed responsibility for the attack. However, in the border province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the number of attacks by Islamist militants, whose main targets are the military and police, has sharply increased in recent months.
The Tehrik-e Taliban Pakistan movement, the main faction of the Pakistani Taliban, said it was not involved in the attack.
Pakistani authorities accuse militants of using safe havens in Afghanistan to prepare and plan attacks. The Afghan Taliban government rejects these accusations and calls the militants an internal problem for Pakistan.
Recall that in Colombia, in the southwest of the country, a bus exploded while traveling on the Pan-American Highway . The incident killed at least 14 people and injured 38 others.
