In Płock, Poland, an adult man attacked a 15-year-old Ukrainian boy because he spoke Ukrainian. The local prosecutor’s office is investigating the incident, TVP Warsaw reports.

The incident occurred on bus route #3. According to the teenager, a stranger approached him and his friend and stated that in Poland they should speak Polish.

After this, the man began to behave aggressively: he hit the guy with his palm, and when the bus stopped, he forcibly pushed both teenagers out of the bus.

The victim’s mother, Natalia Melnik, said that since the incident, she has been constantly worried about her son’s safety and is afraid when he doesn’t answer his phone. She also says she no longer feels safe and is afraid to speak Ukrainian on the street.

The Płock District Prosecutor’s Office has opened a criminal investigation. Investigators have already questioned the minor’s legal representative and a witness to the incident, and are also identifying the attacker. Once the investigation is complete, a decision will be made on possible charges.

According to TVP Warszawa, the incident occurred against the backdrop of a shift in attitudes among some Polish society towards Ukrainian refugees.

Earlier, the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs called on Poland to exercise caution following the Sejm’s consideration of a bill that would equate propaganda of the OUN and UPA ideology with propaganda of Nazism and communism.
