In Taiwan, a man attacked passersby with a knife and a smoke grenade: four people died, 11 others were injured

A knife and smoke grenade attack in central Taipei has left four people dead, including the attacker, and 11 others injured, two of whom are in intensive care.

According to police, the suspect acted alone and had no accomplices. An investigation conducted after the incident did not reveal the involvement of other individuals.

The attacker, 27-year-old Chang Wen from the northern city of Taoyuan, died after falling from a building in a busy shopping district in central Taipei during a police chase.

Police said the man first used a smoke grenade at Taipei Main Station before heading to a shopping mall near a nearby subway station, where he attacked people both inside the building and on the way there.

The motive for the attack is currently under investigation. Taiwanese Prime Minister Cho Chung-tae said the man was wanted on suspicion of evading mandatory military service.

“Based on the checks that have been carried out continuously since yesterday, we have not found that the suspect had any accomplices,” said Chang Zhongxing, director general of the National Police Agency.

In response to the incident, police have increased security measures across the island, including in the capital.

“For areas of Taipei where crowds are expected in commercial areas, we are increasing security across the city. This includes not only increasing police presence, but also ensuring all officers are fully equipped,” said Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-nan.

Taiwan President Lai Chin-te, who visited the injured in the hospital, said it was necessary to draw conclusions from this incident.

“We will also ensure that rapid response units can be immediately deployed in case of emergencies to ensure public safety,” Lai Chinte said.
