A mass anti-government protest took place in the Czech capital, Prague, with at least 400,000 people taking part. Protesters opposed the new government’s policies and accused the authorities of pressuring the media and curtailing democratic processes.

This is reported by ČTK .

The rally was organized by the public movement “A Million Moments for Democracy.” Participants gathered in the city center with flags of the Czech Republic, Ukraine, and the European Union, as well as posters with political cartoons.

According to German businessman Jürgen Nauditt, at least 400,000 people gathered in the streets.

The main reason for the protests was the plans of the government coalition, which includes the ANO party, the SPD and the Motorists party. In particular, discontent was caused by the intention to change the system of financing public broadcasting – Czech Television and Radio, which, according to the participants, could make them dependent on politicians.

“This is not reform, but nationalization and audacity,” said actor Zdenek Świerak.

Another reason for the protests was the preparation of a law on the registration of non-governmental organizations with “foreign ties.” Scientists and public figures believe that the document is analogous to the legislation of Russia, Hungary, and Slovakia and may limit the freedoms of civil society.

Separately, protesters have criticized the government’s foreign policy, calling for cuts in military spending, restrictions on aid to Ukraine, and a rapprochement with political forces linked to Hungary.

Dissatisfaction was also caused by the parliament’s refusal to lift the immunity of Prime Minister Andrej Babis in the financial fraud case.

“Giving key ministries to populists and radicals is too high a price for personal immunity,” said actor Ivan Troyan.

An incident occurred during the rally: police detained a man who opened fire with an airsoft gun from a window. At the same time, law enforcement officers generally kept the situation under control.
