In the southern Philippines, armed assailants attacked the motorcade of the mayor of the city of Sharif Aguac, Acmada Mitra Ampatuan. The mayor himself was not injured in the rocket-propelled grenade attack, but his bodyguards were injured.

According to law enforcement, the incident occurred on the morning of January 25 in the province of Maguindanao del Sur. An armed group attacked the mayor’s motorcade while it was moving and opened fire on his SUV with a rocket-propelled grenade launcher.

According to eyewitness accounts, the attackers arrived in a small minibus, quickly took up positions at an intersection in one of the settlements, and fired a rocket at the mayor’s car. The explosion caused heavy smoke, but the motorcade managed to leave the scene of the attack.

After the attack, the attackers tried to flee. Police said they were pursued by law enforcement, military, and local volunteer groups.
During the pursuit, a shootout occurred. According to security forces, 3 attackers were eliminated because they offered armed resistance.
As a result of the attack, 2 of the mayor’s bodyguards were injured and hospitalized. The condition of the injured is currently being determined. Mayor Akmad Mitra Ampatuan himself was not injured during the attack.
