Unauthorized drone flights are recorded near military bases in the UK almost daily. Over the year, around 340 such incidents were recorded on or near Ministry of Defence facilities.

It is noted that in 2025, 250 incidents involving drones were recorded, which is almost twice as many as the year before, when there were 126. The Ministry of Defense of the United Kingdom did not say who it suspects of involvement in these cases. At the same time, experts suggest that hostile actors acting in the interests of Russia or Iran may be behind some of the incidents.

Former Defense Secretary Tobias Ellwood said the rise in incidents could indicate increased interest in the British military as potential targets.

At the same time, the British Ministry of Defense explains the increase in the number of recorded cases by improving reporting systems and drone detection technologies, as well as increasing the awareness of military personnel.

Armed Forces Minister Louise Sanders-Jones said the government “takes the threat posed by hostile drones to defence assets extremely seriously”, adding that the government was investing in counter-drone systems and expanding the military’s powers to neutralise them.

In February, restricted airspace zones were introduced over 44 critical defense facilities. Such zones are planned to be established over 160 more facilities in the fall.

The government has also announced a fourfold increase in spending on counter-drones. The Defence Investment Plan includes £750 million for counter-drone systems and the protection of the British military.

The UK government has begun work on an updated wartime contingency plan and is urging citizens to prepare for possible major changes to their daily lives. In particular, Britons are advised to stock up on drinking water and canned goods.
