In Ukraine, people called for abandoning mass marches on September 1: what is the reason?

Traditional school lines and other mass events on September 1 may create additional risks for children, teachers, and parents. Education Ombudsman Nadiya Leszczyk urged schools not to hold large gatherings at the beginning of the school year.

Leszczyk wrote about this on Facebook.

According to her, large crowds in schools are dangerous in wartime. In the event of an air raid, it is much more difficult to quickly move a large number of children to a safe place.

“Mass gatherings of people create additional risks, because in the event of an “Air Alert” signal being announced, it is extremely difficult to ensure the quick and safe evacuation of a large number of children in an open area,” the Ombudsman emphasized.

Leszczyk believes that schools should choose a different format for the start of the school year – one that will avoid crowds and at the same time not create additional danger.

She also called on heads of educational institutions to check the readiness of shelters, conduct safety briefings, and provide psychological support for children before the start of classes.

“A child’s safety is a shared responsibility. Let’s make sure that September 1 is remembered by students and parents with safety, care, peace, and confidence in their own protection,” said Leszczyk.
