In Uzhgorod, a mother was convicted of inaction leading to the death of her 10-year-old daughter after she was beaten by her stepfather.

The Uzhgorod City and District Court sentenced the mother of a 10-year-old girl who was brutally beaten by her drunken stepfather and who failed to provide assistance to the child.

The press service of the Transcarpathian Regional Prosecutor’s Office reported this.

The investigation proved that the mother, aware of her daughter’s critical condition following the brutal beating, failed to call paramedics and took no measures to save her life. Experts concluded that timely medical attention could have saved the girl’s life. Due to the mother’s inaction, the child died.

The stepfather who struck Maya dozens of times and caused her death was sentenced to life imprisonment in June 2023.

The prosecutor’s office determined that the woman was aware of the danger to her child. This was confirmed by the victim’s younger sister, who testified during questioning that her mother had entered the room, observed her daughter’s condition, but did nothing.

The court found the woman guilty of abandoning a child to danger, resulting in death. She was sentenced to five years in prison, with a probationary period of two years and eight months. She was also ordered to complete a number of obligations, including a probation program.
