India to buy S-400 systems from Russia for $25 billion
India has approved a large-scale purchase of Russian S-400 air defense systems worth about $25 billion.
This was reported by the Indian Ministry of Defense.
This is a contract within the overall defense procurement package of 2.38 trillion rupees.
The agreement was signed with Rosoboronexport in the presence of Defense Minister Rajesh Kumar Singh.
In addition to the S-400, India also plans to modernize Russian fighter jets and purchase strike drones for reconnaissance and combat operations.
The country currently has three S-400 systems, which were used during the conflict with Pakistan in May 2025. Two more systems are expected in the near future.
Despite its policy of diversifying suppliers, Russia provides more than a third of India’s defense needs.
Experts note that such an agreement could complicate Delhi’s relations with the United States, which has previously criticized the purchase of Russian weapons.
It was previously reported that India plans to resume direct purchases of liquefied natural gas from Russia for the first time since the start of the full-scale war in Ukraine.
