During a meeting with Vladimir Putin at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi called for a speedy end to the war in Ukraine.

This was stated in Modi’s statement on the social network X.

Modi noted that India supports all efforts to establish peace and hopes for constructive actions by all parties.

Ahead of his visit to China, he held a conversation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, after which the Ukrainian leader confirmed India’s readiness to facilitate a peaceful settlement and send a reciprocal signal to Russia and other summit participants.

As you know, on August 31, Russian dictator Vladimir Putin arrived in China for a four-day visit , where he will join a number of measures.

Earlier, US President Donald Trump said he wanted to bring Vladimir Putin and Volodymyr Zelensky to the negotiating table to reach a peace deal to end the war in Ukraine . He emphasized that both sides bear responsibility for the conflict and warned of the possibility of an “economic war” against Russia if there is no progress.

By the way, at the same meeting, the US President’s Special Representative for the Middle East, Steve Witkoff, stated that the US intends to achieve a settlement of Russia’s war against Ukraine by the end of 2025.

Recall that US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent sharply criticized India for actively increasing imports of Russian oil during the war against Ukraine . According to him, New Delhi not only buys raw materials at reduced prices, but also resells products made from them on international markets, extracting significant income from this.

As is known, US President Donald Trump has changed his approach to India policy in order to put more pressure on Vladimir Putin to stop the war against Ukraine.

Let us recall that at the end of July, US President Donald Trump announced the introduction of new tariffs for India: from August 1, the country must pay 25%. He explained that India buys most of its military equipment from Russia and, together with China, is one of the largest consumers of Russian energy.

Subsequently, US President Donald Trump signed an executive order imposing a 25% tariff on goods from India due to its import of oil from Russia. This is Washington’s first official step to punish third countries for cooperation with Russian energy.

Indian refineries have reportedly been given the right to continue buying oil from Russia, as the country’s authorities have not made a decision to ban it.

At the same time , China has stepped up imports of Russian oil, seizing the remaining window of opportunity after Indian demand declined due to American pressure . Thanks to competitive prices, Chinese refineries are increasing supplies of Urals from the Baltic and Black Seas.

In addition, the fourth meeting of the working subgroup of the Russian-Indian intergovernmental commission on military-technical cooperation is scheduled to be held in St. Petersburg next month. At the meeting, Russia and India plan to discuss issues of defense cooperation, military training, and holding joint military exercises.

It should be noted that Indian companies are not only indirectly financing Russia’s war against Ukraine by buying Russian oil, but also supplying components for combat drones used at the front.
