Indonesian authorities have introduced new restrictions for users under 16 on social media. The decision comes amid a global push to tighten controls over digital platforms.
Bloomberg reports this.
The new rules don’t completely ban children’s accounts, but they do impose strict requirements on platforms considered “high-risk.” These include YouTube , TikTok , Instagram , Facebook , X , and Roblox .
These services must restrict access for users under 16, including by deleting or deactivating accounts. At the same time, less risky platforms will be allowed to serve teenagers, but with enhanced security—high levels of privacy, parental controls, and data collection restrictions.
The Ministry of Communications and Digital Affairs , Meutya Hafid, stated that some companies have already begun adapting to the new requirements. Specifically, TikTok plans to gradually deactivate the accounts of users under 16, and Roblox plans to modify its functionality for children.
X also announced its intention to raise the minimum user age to 16. Meta Platforms stated that it has already transferred millions of teenagers to special “teen accounts” on Facebook and Instagram.
Companies that fail to comply with the new requirements could face sanctions, including restrictions on access to their services in Indonesia. They also have until June to conduct a child safety assessment on their platforms.
