Meta has disabled end-to-end encryption for private messages on Instagram globally. The service will no longer support secure chats, where only the sender and recipient have access to the content.

This is reported by the BBC .

End-to-end encryption, or E2EE, is considered one of the most secure ways to send messages online because it allows only the people in the conversation to read the message. Turning this feature off will allow Instagram to access the contents of private messages, including photos, videos, and voice messages.

As noted, Meta has been announcing its intention to implement E2EE on Facebook and Instagram since 2019. In 2023, the company completed the integration of this technology into Facebook Messenger, and on Instagram the function worked as an optional feature.

In March 2026, the company, without public statements, updated Instagram’s terms of use and notified users of the discontinuation of support for end-to-end encryption as of May 8, 2026.

“End-to-end encrypted messages on Instagram will no longer be supported after May 8, 2026. If you have chats affected by this change, you will see instructions for downloading any media or messages you may want to keep,” the company said in a statement.

Meta explained their decision by saying that a small number of people were using the feature.

After abandoning E2EE, Instagram will use standard encryption, which allows ISPs to access private data if necessary. A similar system is used, in particular, in Gmail.

Journalists note that end-to-end encryption remains a standard feature in:

  • Signal;
  • WhatsApp;
  • Facebook Messenger;
  • iMessage;
  • Google Messages.

At the same time, Telegram offers this feature as an option, and TikTok announced in March that it has no plans to implement end-to-end encryption for private messages.
