The Golden Leo, which was damaged by a Russian missile strike on July 19, sank off the coast of Odessa. The damage sustained during the attack led to the vessel becoming unseaworthy and subsequently sinking.

This is reported by the Shipping Administration.

According to the agency, during the Russian attack, the ship suffered significant damage to the hull and superstructure, which subsequently caused it to sink.

There were no crew on board at the time of the sinking. After the shelling on July 19, 8 crew members were evacuated during a search and rescue operation.

At the same time, 9 crew members and a Ukrainian pilot were killed as a result of the Russian strike.

The Golden Leo (IMO 9181833), which sailed under the flag of Guinea-Bissau and was transporting corn, was attacked while leaving the port of Chornomorsk through the sea corridor.

The International Maritime Organization and the shipowner were informed about the incident, which occurred on July 19.

The Shipping Administration emphasized that Russia’s attacks on merchant ships are a gross violation of international maritime law and the principle of freedom of navigation, and also pose a threat to the lives of seafarers, international maritime transportation, and global food security.

Earlier, “Pryamiy” reported that Russian troops launched a missile strike on the civilian dry cargo ship GOLDEN LEO , which was carrying grain and was leaving the combat zone. The attack killed 5 people, and another 5 crew members are missing. Later, it became known that the search and rescue operation in the Black Sea was completed after Russia launched a missile strike on a civilian merchant ship near Odessa . The attack killed 10 people, including a pilot from the Delta Pilot branch of the State Administrative Service of Ukraine.

Recall that on the night of July 24 , the merchant ship Christiana B, which was carrying coal from the United States to Ukraine under the flag of Liberia, was damaged in the Black Sea . Previously, the cause of the incident could have been a sea mine explosion or a strike by a naval drone.

By the way, on the night of July 22, a Russian strike drone attacked the bulk carrier Golden Rose in the Black Sea . After being hit, a fire broke out on the vessel, but Ukrainian border guards were able to evacuate the entire crew.
