The Palau-flagged oil tanker Skylight was attacked in the Strait of Hormuz off the coast of Oman. Four crew members were injured and all 20 sailors were evacuated.
This is reported by Sky News .
The attack occurred 5 nautical miles north of the port of Khasab in Musandam province, while the ship was in the strategically important Strait of Hormuz.
The Maritime Safety Center reported that the crew consisted of 20 people – 15 Indian citizens and 5 Iranian citizens. Initial information indicates that 4 sailors suffered injuries of varying severity and were taken ashore for medical assistance.
The rescue operation was carried out in coordination with the military, security and civilian structures of Oman.
The day before, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps closed the Strait of Oman to shipping. Commercial vessels were receiving notices of a ban on passage through the strait, which was confirmed by the UK’s Merchant Marine Operations Authority.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s key maritime trade routes. Approximately 20 percent of the world’s oil and gas supplies pass through this waterway.
Earlier, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said that Iran considers itself entitled to seek revenge for the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
“The Islamic Republic of Iran considers it its duty and legal right to seek justice and retribution (…), we will make every possible effort to fulfill this obligation,” said Masoud Pezeshkian.
Iranian authorities confirmed on Sunday night that “Khamenei had accepted martyrdom.” The Israel Defense Forces claimed responsibility for the operation.
Earlier it was reported that Iran had blocked the Strait of Hormuz in the Persian Gulf , a key route for oil supplies from the Middle East. The movement of oil tankers in the strait has been effectively halted, and ships have reduced their speed to zero.
It was later reported that two drones attacked a commercial port in the Omani city of Duqm on Sunday. One of the drones reportedly hit a residential complex, injuring a foreign worker.
