Iran’s leadership held a vote on March 8 to choose a successor to the supreme leader following the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The name of the country’s new spiritual leader has not yet been officially announced.

This is reported by The Guardian .

Assembly of Experts member Mohsen Heydari said the body has already made a decision on the candidate to succeed Iran’s supreme leader.

“The most suitable candidate, approved by the majority of the Assembly of Experts, has been identified,” said Mohsen Heydari.

Another member of the body, Mohammad Mehdi Mirbagheri, also confirmed that the majority of participants agreed with this decision.

“A firm opinion was reached that reflects the majority view,” said Mohammad Mehdi Mirbagheri.

At the same time, the name of the new supreme leader has not been officially announced. According to representatives of the body, the surname of the new spiritual leader will remain Khamenei. Journalists assume that this is the son of the deceased Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei.

Mohsen Heydari also stated that the new leader will be someone who is not supported by Washington.

“Someone who is opposed by an enemy is likely to benefit Iran and Islam,” said Mohsen Heydari.

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump said the United States should control the selection of Iran’s new leader. In an interview with ABC News, he noted that without Washington’s approval, the new leader would not be able to stay in power for long.

“If he doesn’t get approval from us, he won’t last long. We want to make sure that we don’t have to come back every 10 years when you don’t have a president like me who won’t do it,” Donald Trump said.

He also added that the US does not want a repeat of situations that could lead to the emergence of nuclear weapons in Iran.

“I don’t want people to come back in 5 years and do the same thing again or, worse, let them have nuclear weapons,” Donald Trump said.

The American president also admitted that he might support a candidate who has ties to the previous regime.

“There are a lot of people who could come up,” Donald Trump said.
