Iran elects Mojtaba Khamenei as new supreme leader: what is known about him

On Sunday, March 8, Iran’s Assembly of Experts elected Ayatollah Seyyed Mojtaba Hosseini Khamenei as the country’s new Supreme Leader in an extraordinary session. He became the third spiritual leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran after the death of his father, Ali Khamenei.

The official statement of the Iranian body notes that the decision was made by a majority vote of the members of the Assembly of Experts.
“At today’s extraordinary meeting, the Assembly of Experts, by a decisive vote of its members, elected and presented Ayatollah Seyyed Mojtaba Hosseini Khamenei as the third leader of the sacred system of the Islamic Republic of Iran,” the statement said.
After the appointment of the new supreme leader, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps declared its support for the decision and swore allegiance to Mojtabi Khamenei.
The corps stated that they support the Assembly of Experts’ choice and are ready for “complete submission and self-sacrifice to carry out the instructions” of the new supreme leader.
Iran reportedly fired a new salvo of missiles and drones in a show of military loyalty to the country’s new leader. Meanwhile, some Tehran residents chanted protest slogans overnight after the decision was announced.
“Death to Mojtabi,” chanted opponents of the Iranian regime.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said that the election of Mojtaba Khamenei marks the beginning of a new phase for the country.
“This marks the beginning of a new era of strength and dignity for the country,” said Masoud Pezeshkian.
He also added that the decision should strengthen national unity and help Iran confront what he called hostile plots.
At the same time, US President Donald Trump refused to comment in detail on the appointment of Iran’s new supreme leader.
“We’ll see what happens,” said Donald Trump.
According to him, the decision to end the war with Iran will be made together with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
“This has to be a mutual decision,” said Donald Trump.
Mojtaba Khamenei (Seyed Mojtaba Hosseini Khamenei) born in 1969 (age 56) is an Iranian religious figure and political figure, the son of the Supreme Leader of Iran , Ali Khamenei . He was long considered one of the most influential figures in the political and security structures of the Islamic Republic.
Mojtaba Khamenei received his religious education in Shiite theological schools (hawzas) in Tehran and the city of Qom, one of the main centers of Shiite theology. He is considered a member of the influential spiritual elite in Iran’s religious circles.
Although Mojtaba Khamenei did not hold official government positions for a long time, he was often called one of the key figures influencing political processes in the country. In particular, analysts have repeatedly pointed to his possible contacts with the command of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
Due to his family connection to the Supreme Leader and his influence in conservative circles, Mojtaba Khamenei has been considered for many years as one of the possible figures in Iran’s top leadership system.
