Iran says it did not ask the US for talks and retains control of the Strait of Hormuz

Iran said it had not asked the United States to resume talks after President Donald Trump’s decision to suspend the airstrike campaign, and stressed that it still controls the Strait of Hormuz.

According to the agency, Donald Trump paused the airstrikes after 13 nights of continuous bombing. As Reuters reported, a US official and a number of local media outlets said, this decision was made after an assessment by the military command.
The source said the military has told the president that the list of identified targets is almost exhausted. At the same time, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Dan Kaine, warned of a reduction in ammunition stocks for air defense systems.
Iran then said it would also suspend its own attacks while the American pause was in effect.
Oil prices fell sharply on the news of the cessation of strikes. Brent, which briefly topped $100 a barrel last week for the first time since May, fell more than 8% on Monday to below $89 a barrel.
At the same time, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Bahai denied reports that Tehran had allegedly asked Washington to resume talks.
“Reports that Iran has requested talks with the US are fabricated. This is not in our DNA,” he said.
According to Bahai, contacts between the parties through intermediaries are ongoing, but this does not mean that Iran has approached the United States with such an initiative.
Tehran also said it continued to control the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for global oil exports. Iranian state media said six ships allegedly tried to pass through the strait without Tehran’s permission on Monday morning. They said they were turned away and one of the ships crashed.
Reuters notes that the United States and Iran have different interpretations of shipping rules in the Strait of Hormuz. Washington insists on freedom of navigation, while Tehran believes it has the right to control transit. According to the agency, Iran also wants to consolidate its position with a separate agreement with Oman.
It was previously reported that on the night of July 15, the United States launched a new series of strikes on Iranian military facilities and announced the resumption of a naval blockade of ships heading to or leaving Iranian ports .
