Is Russia planning an attack on Kyiv in 2027: the commander of the National Guard assessed the threat
Командувач Національної гвардії України Олександр Півненко
To attempt an offensive in northern Ukraine, Russia would need to muster at least 70,000 troops. Currently, Ukrainian intelligence has not recorded the formation of such a group, but the enemy may consider creating a buffer zone along the border, in particular in the Chernihiv region.
This was stated by the Commander of the National Guard of Ukraine, Oleksandr Pivnenko, in an interview with Noviny.Live.
He also commented on the likelihood of a second offensive by Russian troops on Kyiv in February-March 2027. According to Pivnenko, such a scenario is currently unlikely.
“I don’t believe it,” said the commander.
At the same time, he suggested that Russia could intensify its actions in the northern direction if it accumulates enough forces for an offensive operation. In particular, it is talking about a possible attempt to create a buffer zone in the Chernihiv region.
Pivnenko noted that he discussed this issue with the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, and this assessment is not just his personal opinion.
“This is possible if they have 70,000 military personnel and they gain the potential that is minimally needed for an attack on Kyiv,” he explained.
According to the commander, the creation of a buffer zone could force the Ukrainian side to transfer troops from other directions, which would lead to the dispersion of forces and defense resources.
It was previously reported that a new stage of the Russian ground offensive is underway in northern Ukraine. In the Sumy region, Russian troops continue to transfer infantry groups within the Yunakivska and Khotynska communities.
In addition, the French newspaper Le Monde published a report on the Dnipro, which the journalists called “the crossroads of three fronts” and one of Ukraine’s key logistical hubs. The article notes that in the event of a new large-scale Russian operation, the city could become a strategic target for Moscow.
