The Israeli military said that a senior Hezbollah leader, Haitham Ali Tabatabai, was killed in an airstrike on the southern suburbs of Beirut. The group confirmed his death and said that a “red line” had been crossed.
This is reported by Reuters .
The Israeli military said the airstrike on the southern outskirts of Beirut targeted Hezbollah’s acting chief of staff, Haitham Ali Tabatabai. It was the first strike in months in the Lebanese capital despite a U.S.-brokered ceasefire a year ago.
The group confirmed Tabatabay’s death. Hezbollah spokesman Mahmoud Qmati said the Israeli strike crossed a “red line.”
“Israel’s strike crossed a red line,” said Mahmoud Qmati.
He added that the group’s leadership will determine whether there will be a reaction and what it will be.
Lebanon’s Health Ministry said five people were killed and 28 others were injured in the attack, which struck a high-rise building and sent debris falling onto cars parked on the main road below.
The Israeli army said in a statement that Tabatabai “commanded most of Hezbollah’s units and made great efforts to restore their combat readiness for war with Israel.”
“He commanded most of Hezbollah’s units and restored their combat readiness,” the Israeli army said in a statement.
It is worth recalling that the United States imposed sanctions on Tabatabay in 2016 and offered a reward of up to $5 million for information about him.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stressed in a brief televised statement that Israel would not allow Hezbollah to rebuild its forces.
“Israel will not allow Hezbollah to rebuild its forces. We expect the Lebanese government to fulfill its obligation to disarm this group,” Benjamin Netanyahu said.
Recall that Israel accused Hamas of violating the ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip, and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered immediate “powerful strikes” in response.
The day before, Trump announced that Israel and the Hamas group had reached an agreement on the implementation of the first phase of the peace plan , which concerns the Gaza Strip.
By the way, on Monday, October 13,the Palestinian group Hamas released all hostages kidnapped from Israel.
The Israeli army earlier reported a series of attacks by Hamas militants outside the buffer zone , which it said were a gross violation of the current ceasefire. Palestinian sources, however, accuse Israel of dozens of violations of agreements reached in October.
