The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) has announced the start of a “limited ground operation” against Hezbollah in southern Lebanon. According to the Israeli military, the operation is aimed at establishing and strengthening forward defensive positions and destroying the group’s infrastructure.
This is reported by DW .
The Israel Defense Forces statement noted that the ground operations are aimed at eliminating Hezbollah infrastructure in the border region.
“The operation aims to create and strengthen a forward defensive position and destroy terrorist infrastructure,” the Israeli military command said.
According to the military, before the introduction of ground units, the Israeli air force and artillery struck numerous targets of the group in southern Lebanon.
A day earlier, the Iranian-backed Hezbollah group announced “direct” combat clashes with the Israeli army in the region.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) has previously conducted tactical operations along the shared border between Israel and Lebanon. In early March 2026, the military reported strikes on Hezbollah infrastructure, which it said was carrying out attacks on Israel on behalf of the Iranian regime.
On the eve, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said that the country may occupy territories in southern Lebanon if Hezbollah militants are not disarmed.
“The Lebanese government will pay a heavy price in terms of damage to national infrastructure and territorial losses until it fulfills its obligations to disarm the radical group,” Katz said.
The Lebanese government then imposed an “immediate ban” on Hezbollah’s military activities and demanded that its fighters lay down their weapons. The government’s decision designated the group as an “illegal paramilitary group.”
It has previously been reported that Israel is preparing for a large-scale ground operation in Lebanon and is deploying 3 divisions to the northern border. The operation could be the largest in the last 20 years.
By the way, the pro-Iranian group Hezbollah fired rockets at northern Israel on the night of March 2. In response, the Israel Defense Forces launched strikes on the group’s targets in Lebanon and announced the start of a ground operation.
Recall that on February 28, Israel launched preemptive strikes on Iran, as well as attacked Hezbollah targets in southern Lebanon . A state of emergency was declared throughout the country.
