It became known what Poroshenko told EU leaders before the European Council meeting
Petro Poroshenko, during a speech at the summit of leaders of the European People’s Party, stated that the only way to contain the global upheaval is to stop the Russian war against Ukraine, because it is the root cause of instability.
“Many are now looking at the Middle East, at Iran. But it all started with Ukraine and Russia’s war. The best way to stop a global upheaval is to eliminate its root causes. Dozens of wars can be settled, but those who stop Russia’s war against Ukraine will remain in history. This is where European and world attention should be focused, and not elsewhere. They will continue to try to distract our attention from a practical and correct formula. However, we must stay the course despite all these blows of uncertainty,” Poroshenko believes.
In his opinion, there are three priorities:
The first is that strong transatlantic unity must be restored, because all our enemies fear our unity and coordination;
The second is that Ukraine must be strengthened and Russia must be weakened, because the global upheaval is fueled by Russia, which still remains strong;
The third is Ukraine’s internal stability, because it is Ukraine that keeps the world from falling into even greater global turmoil.
“Transatlantic unity was never a given. But when it was in place, no enemy of democracy dared to challenge us,” the fifth President explains.
“My second point concerns Ukraine and Russia. We must establish a balance that works in our favor, not in favor of Russia. It is Ukraine that should determine the principles of ending this war, not Russia. It is we who should push Russia back into its corner, not Moscow. It is we who should establish the “red lines”, not Putin or his allies,” Petro Poroshenko emphasized.
To strengthen Ukraine, he believes, it is necessary to ensure:
– support for the modern Armed Forces of Ukraine without restrictions;
– provision of weapons and armaments without delay;
– development of the Ukrainian defense industry as part of the EU defense industry;
– sustained economic and financial assistance, including the disbursement of a loan of 90 billion euros and the use of frozen Russian assets for military and reconstruction needs;
– security guarantees for Ukraine, based on two pillars – full accession to the EU on the basis of merit and the presence of troops (“boots on the ground”) of the Coalition of the Resolute.
Instead, weakening Russia means, first of all, increasing political, economic and sanctions pressure, including the adoption of the 20th package of EU sanctions. “We must strike where the engine of Russia’s war is located – Gazprom, Rosatom, oil and gas in general,” Poroshenko said. Russia must be held accountable for all its crimes, such as the massacre in Bucha, crimes against humanity, murder, torture, deportation of children, for challenging the world order and plunging the whole world into global turmoil, the fifth President emphasized.
“If Russia wants to wage a long war, we must make a long war economically impossible for it. Only by strengthening Ukraine and weakening Russia can we find a way to end the war. The starting point must be an immediate, unconditional and comprehensive ceasefire,” Poroshenko believes.
“My third point concerns internal unity in Ukraine, which is critically important. Today, many are talking about the so-called parliamentary crisis in Ukraine, as if it has become impossible to pass laws and implement reforms. This is not true. If there is a crisis, it is a crisis of political responsibility. We have long clearly identified specific priorities that must be fulfilled,” Poroshenko said.
According to him, a coalition of national unity must be created, the full independence of anti-corruption institutions must be guaranteed; criminal liability must be ensured for all identified corruption schemes; and 10 priority points for fundamental reforms must be implemented.
“Pressure on political opponents, civil society, and the media in Ukraine must be stopped. Restrictions on parliamentary diplomacy must be lifted. Illegal and unconstitutional sanctions and blackmail against opponents must be stopped and forgotten forever,” the opposition leader believes.
“We are all going through trials — Ukraine, Europe, and the transatlantic unity that binds us. However, so far we have met these challenges with dignity and determination,” said Petro Poroshenko.
The EPP Leaders’ Summit , which took place before the European Council meeting, was attended by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Parliament President Roberta Metzola, heads of state and government of 11 EU countries, including German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenković, EPP President Manfred Weber, as well as opposition leaders from a number of European countries.
