Russian President Vladimir Putin said after talks with Donald Trump in Alaska that a resolution to the war in Ukraine is possible only after eliminating its “fundamental causes” and restoring the balance of security in Europe. He called the meeting “mutually respectful” and invited the American leader to the next summit in Moscow.
This is reported by CNN .
Putin began his statement by assessing the current relations between Moscow and Washington.
“Relations between Russia and the United States were at their worst since the Cold War,” he said.
The Kremlin leader stressed that the talks with Trump took place in a constructive atmosphere.
“These were respectful, constructive, and mutually respectful discussions,” he noted.
The main topic was the war in Ukraine.
“We are convinced that in order to make the settlement lasting and long-term, it is necessary to eliminate all the main roots, the main causes of this conflict. To take into account all the legitimate concerns of Russia and restore a fair balance of security in Europe and the world as a whole,” Putin said.
He agreed with Trump’s position on the need for security guarantees for Ukraine, but warned Western capitals against actions that could disrupt the process.
“Do not create obstacles and do not try to disrupt progress through provocations and backroom intrigues,” he added.
At the end of his speech, the Russian president suggested holding the next meeting in Moscow, speaking in English. He also reiterated that the 2022 war, in his opinion, could have been avoided if Donald Trump had been president of the United States at the time.
