US President Donald Trump said at the G7 summit in Alberta, Canada, that he would not rush to impose new sanctions against Russia. The main reason is the high economic costs to the United States.
This is reported by Bloomberg .
“Don’t forget, you know, sanctions cost us a lot of money. When I put sanctions on a country, it costs the United States a lot of money, huge amounts of money,” Trump said, emphasizing that such measures come at a cost not only to Russia, but also to American taxpayers and businesses.
He added that he wanted to “first see if an agreement will be signed,” referring to a possible diplomatic breakthrough between Moscow and Kyiv.
Trump’s statement has raised concerns among allies. The leaders of France, Germany and Canada at the summit strongly called for increased pressure on the Kremlin. But Trump questioned their resolve.
“Europe says it, but it hasn’t done it yet. We’ll see how they implement it,” he added.
Trump’s previous phrase during a meeting with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz gained particular resonance: “Maybe it’s worth giving Moscow and Kyiv a little fight.”
Previously, the Donald Trump administration terminated the activities of an interagency group that was developing a strategy to pressure Russia to promote a peaceful resolution to the war in Ukraine.
By the way, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer intends to announce new sanctions against Russia as allies try to bring Vladimir Putin to the negotiating table.
Recall, on Monday, June 16, the Council of the European Union renewed the sanctions imposed against Russia in response to the annexation of Crimea, extending them until June 23, 2026.
