Several MPs who supported the controversial bill No. 12414, which narrows the powers of the NABU and the SAPO, have publicly admitted their mistake and declared their readiness to correct the situation. The reaction followed a wave of public outrage and criticism from Ukraine’s international partners.

Servant of the People MP Zhan Beleniuk noted that the vote was his personal mistake. “I’m not looking for excuses. My task is to correct the situation as quickly and transparently as possible,” he wrote on social media.

His colleague in the faction, Serhiy Shtepa, explained that he voted, considering the bill to be internationally agreed. “Later it became clear that this was not the case. Especially after the statements of Ursula von der Leyen and Senator Lindsey Graham,” he added.

Tamila Tasheva, a member of parliament from Holos, supported the presidential bill No. 13533, which returns powers to anti-corruption agencies. “Everyone can make mistakes. It is important to admit this in time and hear the voice of society,” she wrote.

People’s Deputy Rostyslav Tistyk also said that he expects support for the presidential initiative. “Society has a voice – politicians must hear it,” he noted.

Vasyl Mokan recognized the vote on the bill as “the first serious miscalculation of the term,” and Pavlo Bakunets from the “Trust” group called for an urgent return to parliamentary work on improving anti-corruption legislation.

On the evening of July 24, President Zelenskyy registered in the Rada draft law No. 13533, which restores the independence of the NABU and the SAPO, abolished by Law No. 12414.

According to People’s Deputy Yaroslav Zheleznyak, the new document corrects key norms that caused a flurry of criticism from Ukrainian society and Western allies.

As a reminder, on July 22, the Verkhovna Rada voted for a bill that significantly limits the powers of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office (SAP) , effectively subordinating their activities to the Prosecutor General, and Volodymyr Zelenskyy signed it.

As reported, society negatively perceived the actual destruction of anti-corruption bodies . On July 22 and 23, hundreds of people in many cities of Ukraine took to rallies against Law No. 12414.

Subsequently, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky submitted to the Verkhovna Rada a law on “strengthening the powers of the NABU and the SAPO.”
