A Russian oil tanker is heading to the coast of Cuba, and US authorities are not preventing its passage. US President Donald Trump said he sees no problem with such a supply.
This is reported by The New York Times .
According to journalists, the tanker, which belongs to the Russian government, is carrying about 730,000 barrels of oil and is near Cuban territorial waters. It is expected that the vessel could arrive at the port of Matanzas by the evening of March 30.
US President Donald Trump commented on this situation.
“We have a tanker there. We don’t mind anyone getting a cargo because they need it — they need to survive… Well, I would say if some country wants to send some oil to Cuba right now, I have no problem with that,” he said.
At the same time, he rejected the suggestion that such supplies could help Russia.
“He loses one cargo of oil. That’s it. That’s fine. If he wants to do it, and if other countries want to do it, I’m not too concerned. It won’t have an impact,” Trump said.
The US president also added that “Cuba is over.”
“They have a bad regime. They have very bad and corrupt leadership. And whether they get a cargo of oil or not, it won’t matter,” he said.
Journalists say the decision not to block the tanker avoids a potential confrontation with Russia off the coast of Florida. At the same time, it is unclear whether the White House will allow further deliveries of Russian oil to Cuba.
Analysts believe the tanker’s arrival could temporarily ease Cuba’s energy crisis, which is experiencing fuel shortages. It could provide the country with resources for several weeks.
“This gives them time. But it’s not a magic wand that suddenly, with the arrival of this tanker, solves all their problems,” said expert Jorge Pignon.
According to him, oil refining and distribution could take about 4 weeks, and the resulting fuel would primarily be used for transportation, power plants, and public sector supplies.
By the way, on Saturday, March 21, Cuba experienced a power outage for the second time in a week , leaving more than 10 million people without electricity.
The previous nationwide blackout, as reported by “Pryamiy” , occurred in Cuba on March 16 , due to a failure in the national power grid caused by a blockade of oil supplies from the United States. The United States began this blockade at the beginning of the year and did not ease it even against the background of the easing of the sanctions regime against Iranian and Russian oil due to the closure of shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
US President Donald Trump has made no secret of his intentions to seize the island in order to change the communist regime.
Earlier, anti-government protests erupted in the Cuban city of Morón over power outages and food shortages . During the demonstration, protesters attacked the Communist Party office and several government institutions.
