Japan has admitted the possibility of deploying American nuclear weapons.

Japan may abandon some of its long-standing pacifist policies and consider hosting American nuclear weapons on its territory.

This was reported by the Mainichi newspaper, citing Japanese Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae.

According to the newspaper, the head of government declared the need to “revise three long-standing non-nuclear principles” in effect in the country since World War II. These principles include Japan’s refusal to “possess,” “produce,” and “deploy” nuclear weapons.

“We must initiate a serious debate about current non-nuclear principles. The security situation has changed significantly, and we must consider all possible options for defending our country,” Takaichi Sanae emphasized.

According to the Mainichi , the prime minister is proposing to allow the deployment of American strategic nuclear weapons at Japanese military facilities. If this decision is made, Japan will effectively take a historic step—for the first time in a decade, abandoning its strict policy of nuclear pacifism.

The debate around this topic is already causing widespread resonance in Japanese society and political circles, as the country remains the only one in the world to have survived nuclear strikes on civilian cities.
