Kaczynski claimed that Ukraine allegedly wanted to drag Poland into war and create a common state.

The leader of the Polish Law and Justice (PiS) party, Jarosław Kaczyński, stated that at the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion, Ukraine allegedly sought to draw Poland into the war, in particular through the idea of creating a “unified state.”

He said this during a speech at the Youth Congress in Augustów, writes Rzeczpospolita and quotes Dziennik.pl.

According to the Polish politician, at the initial stage of the war, Kyiv expected Warsaw to take actions that the Polish side could not agree to.

“At first, the Ukrainians had a somewhat strange idea—to drag us into this war even by creating a unified state. President Zelenskyy’s speech in the Sejm went precisely in that direction,” Kaczyński stated.

At the same time, he claimed that Ukraine subsequently changed its approach to relations with Poland.

Kaczynski also claimed that Kyiv had misjudged Poland’s military capabilities at the start of a full-scale war. According to him, Warsaw “had virtually no real armed forces” at the time and was in no position to enter the war.

The politician added that, in his opinion, Poland’s NATO membership could also have influenced Ukraine’s position. However, he noted that he was not certain of this and that it was up to historians to evaluate such circumstances.

Kaczynski also reported that during the first months of the war, the Ukrainian side put forward certain expectations to Poland that Warsaw could not agree to, but the parties, according to him, usually managed to find a solution to maintain good Polish-Ukrainian relations.
