Former US presidential envoy to Ukraine General Keith Kellogg has said that alternative military alliances may be needed to replace NATO. He also suggested that the US could invoke Article 13 of the alliance to prepare for withdrawal.
This is reported by Fox News .
Kellogg criticized NATO and noted the need to review the current security system. According to him, the United States could give the Alliance advance notice of its intention to withdraw, giving it 1 year to prepare.
He proposed considering the creation of new defense alliances involving a number of countries that, in his opinion, are ready for a more active role in security matters.
“Redesign the defense structures that we have, perhaps create them with Japan and Australia, and also with some of those European countries that are ready to go to war, such as a new, re-engaged Germany or Poland. Or, even, Ukraine, which has also shown itself to be a good ally,” said Keith Kellogg.
It is worth adding that NATO Article 13 defines the procedure for a state’s voluntary withdrawal from the Alliance . It provides that any member state can independently decide to withdraw, without the need for agreement with other members.
The procedure consists of an official notification to the government of the United States of America, which is the depositary of the treaty. After that, a 1-year countdown begins, and only after this period has elapsed does the country officially cease to be a member of NATO.
By the way, Ukraine and NATO have reached an unprecedented level of cooperation, but the issue of membership remains unresolved. The main reason for this is said to be the political factor related to Russia’s influence on the allies’ position.
Earlier, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized that the issue of Ukraine’s accession to NATO is the exclusive competence of the Alliance’s member states.
Recall that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that during preliminary consultations with the American authorities, Ukraine agreed to a compromise step regarding the prospects of joining NATO within the framework of discussions on US President Donald Trump’s peace plan.
