Kharkiv under new threat: fiber-optic drone reaches city for the first time

The first time an FPV drone was used on fiber optics was recorded in Kharkiv. It happened in the Kyivskyi district of the city, when the drone hit a tree.

This was announced by Serhiy Flesh Beskrestnov, advisor to the Minister of Defense of Ukraine, a specialist in electronic warfare and communications systems.

“These are real threats that we will have to deal with technologically. Detection based on PER will not work here, radar will help, but in the case of low-flying FPV, they are not a panacea. Acoustics? Maybe,” he wrote.

The fact of the use of a drone was confirmed by the Kharkiv Regional Prosecutor’s Office.

“According to the investigation, on February 25, at around 3:00 p.m., servicemen of the Russian Armed Forces, violating the laws and customs of war, used a 13-inch FPV drone on fiber optics over the territory of the Kyiv district of Kharkiv. The drone hit a tree,” the post says.

The prosecutor’s office emphasized that this case is the first recorded use of an FPV drone on fiber optics in Kharkiv since the beginning of the Russian Federation’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

A pre-trial investigation has been initiated into the use of the drone under Part 1 of Article 438 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine on violation of the laws and customs of war.

Recall that the Russian army began using Shahed kamikaze drones as carriers for FPV drones.

As reported, Russia is modernizing its drone tactics in the war against Ukraine. The Gerber UAV was first used as a carrier of an FPV drone.
