North Korean leader Kim Jong-un is strengthening the position of his daughter Kim Ju-ae as a potential successor. According to South Korean intelligence, she is increasingly participating in public events and may be involved in policymaking.

According to South Korea’s National Intelligence Service, Kim Joo-ye may be formally introduced at the upcoming Workers’ Party Congress of the DPRK. The agency plans to monitor whether she will be given a formal status or title at the event.

“Previously, the NIS described Kim Joo-ae as being considered for the role of successor, but today the expression was used that she is in the process of being internally appointed as successor,” lawmaker Lee Seong-kwon said after a closed intelligence briefing.

According to intelligence reports, the daughter of the North Korean leader has been appearing more frequently in North Korean state media. She accompanies Kim Jong-un on inspections, including during inspections of weapons production projects.

Lawmakers Lee Seong-kwon and Park Seong-won noted that Kim Joo-ae’s role during public events may indicate her involvement in policymaking and that she is viewed as the second-ranking leader.

North Korea has also announced the 9th Workers’ Party Congress to be held in late February. The event is expected to determine key policy directions for the state in the areas of economy, defense, and foreign relations.

The question of succession in North Korea has been a hot topic among international officials and analysts, particularly given the country’s expanding nuclear capabilities and reports of Kim Jong-un’s health. In the event of a change of power, Kim Joo-ae could become North Korea’s first female leader.

Recall that North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un supervised the test launch of strategic cruise missiles and gave the order to fully prepare nuclear forces for use.
