In Pyongyang, delegates to the 9th Congress of the Workers’ Party of Korea re-elected the leader of the party and country, Kim Jong-un, as General Secretary for the next 5-year term. The decision was made unanimously.

The report notes that the congress unanimously supported Kim Jong-un’s candidacy.

“The Ninth Congress of the WPK unanimously adopted a decision to elect Comrade Kim Jong Un as General Secretary of the WPK, reflecting the will and desire of all delegates, party members, the people, and servicemen of the People’s Army,” the statement said.

According to the agency, nearly 5,000 delegates expressed full support for Kim Jong-un as party and state leader.

The congress also elected the central committee of the Workers’ Party of Korea and other governing bodies of the ruling party.

President of the People’s Republic of China Xi Jinping congratulated Kim Jong-un on his re-election and promised to further strengthen strategic cooperation with the “friendly socialist neighbor.”

Other decisions of the congress, in particular regarding the directions of economic development, the security sector, and foreign policy for the next 5 years, are not yet reported.

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has been reported to be strengthening the position of his daughter Kim Ju-ae as a potential successor . According to South Korean intelligence, she is increasingly participating in public events and may be involved in policymaking.
