Prosecutor General of Ukraine Ruslan Kravchenko may personally participate in the trial of former judge Oleksiy Tandyr, who is accused of fatally hitting a National Guard serviceman.
This was reported by a Hromadske correspondent on Monday, September 22. Journalists asked Kravchenko what high-profile cases he was ready to take under his own control after the trial of the murder of a teenager on a funicular . In this case, the prosecutor personally led the prosecution team, and the court passed a life sentence for Artem Kosov, as the prosecution demanded.
Kravchenko noted that he is also currently dealing with the case of prosecutor Andriy Molochny, who is suspected of running over a woman on the sidewalk. When asked by journalists about his possible participation in the process regarding Tandyr, he replied: “Okay, I will consider your request.”
The Tandoori Case
On the night of May 26, 2023, the then head of the Makariv District Court, Oleksiy Tandyr, shot and killed 23-year-old National Guardsman Vadym Bondarenko at a checkpoint in Kyiv. According to the State Bureau of Investigation, after the accident, the judge refused to undergo a medical examination for intoxication, but later biological samples were forcibly taken from him.
On May 27, Tandyr was remanded in custody without bail . In July, investigators confirmed that he had been driving under the influence . Later, media outlets reported that Tandyr continued to receive his salary from the Makariv District Court while in pre-trial detention, but he denied this.
In January 2024, the disciplinary chamber of the High Council of Justice suspended the consideration of the case due to lack of time and the absence of documents from the prosecutor’s office. Already in August, it became known that the High Council of Justice had decided to dismiss Tandyr from the position of judge.
