The United States has expressed its readiness to provide support to its European allies within the framework of a new security assurance initiative for Ukraine.
This is stated in a recent report by analysts from the Institute for the Study of War (ISW).
According to researchers, Washington has agreed to provide auxiliary forces, including strategic elements such as intelligence capabilities, command and control assets, and air defense support. It was previously reported that the Donald Trump administration has taken a less decisive position on US participation in the post-war settlement of the situation in Ukraine.
The Financial Times also notes that potential US participation in a peacekeeping mission in Ukraine depends on the willingness of European partners to send “tens of thousands” of troops to the area, a move aimed at stabilizing the situation after the active phase of the war ends.
Despite the efforts of Western powers, Russia openly declares the unacceptability of the proposed security formats for Ukraine. According to ISW analysis, Russian officials have repeatedly spoken out against any participation of NATO countries in guarantees for Kyiv.
Although Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov previously voiced support for the idea of security arrangements and even named countries that could act as guarantors, his rhetoric has changed dramatically recently. Lavrov recently stated that the United States should not take responsibility for Ukraine’s security in the post-war period.
In turn, the Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman stressed that Moscow does not recognize any options that involve the presence of NATO military contingents on Ukrainian territory. According to ISW experts, such statements indicate the Kremlin’s deep rejection of any format of guarantees that is not based on Moscow’s full control or dominance in the region.
As a reminder, US President Donald Trump has said he wants to bring Vladimir Putin and Volodymyr Zelensky to the negotiating table to reach a peace agreement to end the war in Ukraine. He emphasizes that both sides bear responsibility for the conflict and has warned of the possibility of “economic war” against Russia in the absence of progress.
As reported, US President’s Special Representative for the Middle East, Steve Witkoff, stated that the US intends to achieve a resolution to Russia’s war against Ukraine by the end of 2025.
