Russian President Vladimir Putin said that Ukraine was allegedly shelling the territory of the Zaporizhzhia NPP, and threatened a “mirror” response to Ukrainian nuclear power plants.
This is reported by Russian media.
During a speech at the Valdai Discussion Club, Vladimir Putin accused the Armed Forces of Ukraine of shelling the territory of the occupied Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant. According to him, the strikes are being carried out with artillery, and the IAEA representatives who are at the plant are allegedly “keeping quiet about the situation.”
“They (IAEA experts) are silent, ashamed of these processes, but they see what is happening. This is a dangerous game. And people on the other side should also understand: if they play like this, they still have a functioning nuclear power plant on their side. What prevents us from responding in kind? Let them think about it,” Putin said.
The statement came against the backdrop of the recent emergency at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. On October 1, a Russian attack on the power facility in Slavutych caused the plant to blackout for more than three hours.
The New Safe Confinement (NSC), which isolates the destroyed fourth power unit, as well as the storage facility where more than 3,250 tons of spent nuclear fuel are stored, was left without power.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stressed that this was a targeted strike, during which Russia used more than 20 drones. Some of the drones were destroyed by Ukrainian air defenses.
By the way, the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant has been operating in backup diesel generator mode for over a week , which creates serious safety risks.
As a reminder, the Center of National Resistance stated that the fuel crisis in the temporarily occupied territories poses a security threat to the Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant.
As Energoatom reported, the Russian occupiers are deliberately not connecting the Zaporizhzhia NPP to external power supply . The blackout at the station continues, which creates critical risks for Ukraine and all of Europe. Such actions by the enemy could lead to a nuclear disaster.
