The US military has taken control of the oil tanker Sagitta in the waters of the Caribbean Sea, which is linked to Russia’s so-called “shadow fleet”.
The operation was reported by the US Southern Command, as well as the War&Sanctions platform.
According to the American side, the detention took place without incident and was carried out with the participation of the US Department of Homeland Security. The command emphasized that the vessel violated restrictions imposed by President Donald Trump on the movement of sanctioned ships in the Caribbean.
The United States emphasized that such actions are part of a policy of strict control of maritime transportation and are aimed at allowing the transportation of only oil from Venezuela that is transported legally and in accordance with international standards.
Meanwhile, the War&Sanctions website lists the Sagitta among vessels involved in sanctions-evading schemes for transporting Russian oil. Restrictions on such operations have previously been imposed by Ukraine, the US, the UK, EU countries, Canada, Switzerland, Australia and New Zealand.
As a reminder, the US previously detained the oil tanker Olina in the Caribbean near Trinidad . The vessel is linked to the export of Russian oil in circumvention of international sanctions.
As reported, at dawn on January 15, American special forces seized another tanker of the Russian “shadow fleet” in the Caribbean Sea, off the coast of Venezuela , which transports oil in circumvention of international sanctions.
By the way, the United Kingdom is preparing to forcefully intercept tankers of the so-called “shadow fleet” that transport oil in circumvention of international sanctions.
