Kyiv bids farewell to Patriarch Filaret: funeral procession passes through the center of the capital

A farewell ceremony for the emeritus patriarch of Kyiv and All Rus’-Ukraine, Filaret, is being held in Kyiv on March 22. The funeral procession passed through the city center, and the burial will take place in St. Volodymyr’s Cathedral.

In the morning, a funeral liturgy was held at the St. Michael’s Golden-Domed Monastery, led by the Primate of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine, Metropolitan Epiphany. Hundreds of people came to bid farewell to the church hierarch.

After the service, the funeral procession set off from the St. Michael’s Monastery through Sophia Square to St. Volodymyr’s Cathedral. Priests who arrived from different regions of Ukraine formed a corridor along the route.

Several thousand people joined the funeral procession. The funeral will be completed in the Volodymyr Cathedral and the burial will be held in accordance with Filaret’s spiritual will.

It was previously reported that on Friday, March 20, the Patriarch Emeritus of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine, Filaret, passed away . He was 97 years old.

Subsequently, the fifth President of Ukraine, Petro Poroshenko, said that Patriarch Filaret was a great Ukrainian and forever entered the history of our state.
