Last chance to end the war: US and Iran negotiate a ceasefire

The United States, Iran and some regional mediators are discussing the possibility of implementing a 45-day ceasefire that could lead to a final truce.

This was reported by Axios, citing sources.

According to the interlocutors, the chances of reaching a partial agreement within the next 48 hours are small.

At the same time, an attempt to negotiate a ceasefire is the only chance to prevent a sharp escalation of the conflict. In particular, we are talking about massive strikes on Iran’s civilian infrastructure and retaliatory attacks on energy and water facilities in Middle Eastern countries.

Earlier, US President Donald Trump assured that the US is “in deep talks” with Iran, and an agreement could be reached by Tuesday.

“There’s a good chance, but if they don’t make a deal, I’ll blow everything up there,” he threatened.

Diplomatic efforts to resolve the war are being carried out through a number of mediators — Pakistan, Turkey and Egypt, four sources said.

In addition, Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi interact via text messages.

The American official noted that the United States has made several proposals to Iran in recent days, but Tehran has not yet accepted them.

It is known that mediators are discussing a two-stage proposal with the parties. First, the countries will cease fire for 45 days, during which they will reach a final truce. And later, they will conclude an agreement to end the war.

However, Iran is unlikely to agree to give up highly enriched uranium and unblock the Strait of Hormuz in favor of a 45-day ceasefire. The mediators expressed concern about this and stressed that “the next 48 hours are the last chance to reach an agreement.”

Currently, Pakistan, Turkey, and Egypt are trying to understand whether the Iranian side is ready for compromise and are working on steps that the Trump administration could take to convince Tehran that war will not happen again.

Earlier, US President Donald Trump said that the new Iranian president had offered Washington a ceasefire between the two countries. He added that the US would consider the issue when “the Strait of Hormuz is open, free and clear.”

It is worth noting that the Iranian Foreign Ministry denied Trump’s statement that Tehran had requested a ceasefire.

The other day, Trump announced that the US and Iran had held talks, following which he ordered a five-day halt to strikes .

Later, the Iranian Foreign Ministry reported that there were no direct negotiations with the US , and Trump did not abandon his military plans.
