Latvia strengthens security at Riga airport amid flights of unidentified drones

The Latvian government has decided to allocate almost 2.5 million euros to protect Riga Airport from drone flights of unknown origin.

This was reported by the Delfi publication.

In particular, almost 2 million euros will be financed from the European Regional Development Fund, and about 465 thousand more will be used from the state budget.

The Ministry of Transport has already prepared a defense project. According to it, comprehensive technological solutions will be implemented that will allow tracking unmanned aerial vehicles.

The goal of the project is to counter unauthorized drones flying in critical air traffic zones and on airport grounds.

The airport is planned to be equipped with sensors and provided with the necessary software.

The department emphasized that the facility is an important state-level infrastructure, and the impact on it threatens the security of society and the state.

The financial report indicates the completion of the procurement process for equipment for detection, identification, tracking and countering UAVs. A supplier has also been selected, with a contract signed in July.

It is worth noting that in recent months, several European countries have recorded unidentified drones near their airports.

Earlier, several flights heading to Brussels Airport were canceled or forced to change their route after reports of possible drones near the airport.

Recall that in November, Vilnius airport suspended operations due to the appearance of an unknown drone .
