Deputies of the Latvian Seimas have decided to reallocate five million euros for the purchase of unmanned aerial vehicles to support Ukraine in 2025. The funds are planned to be used to provide the Ukrainian side with modern unmanned systems and develop Latvian industry in the field of dual-use technologies.
This is reported by the Delfi agency.
Funding of five million euros will be redirected from the budget program of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Latvia for the current year, which was originally intended for Latvia’s contribution to the European Peace Mechanism.
The funds are being transferred to the Latvian Ministry of Defense for the purchase of unmanned systems and support for Ukraine. It will also contribute to the development of the local industry in the field of dual-use technologies.
The Latvian Foreign Ministry explains that the redistribution is possible due to Hungary’s blocking of the decision to provide military assistance to Ukraine through the European Peace Mechanism.
“Latvia’s planned contributions to the mechanism for 2025 were not used in full, therefore the unused amount is being redirected within the funds available in the state budget,” the department noted.
By the way, Latvia has handed over 21 Patria 6×6 armored personnel carriers to Ukraine . The vehicles were handed over in Riga at the Adaži military base.
As is known, the Latvian government has decided to finance defense support for Ukraine within the framework of the international PURL initiative, the total amount of assistance will be 5 million euros.
