Latvia has confirmed its readiness to join NATO’s initiative for centralized support to Ukraine, aimed at strengthening its defense capabilities in confrontation with Russia.

This is reported by Liepajniekiem.lv.

As Latvian Prime Minister Evika Silinja announced after a government meeting on August 12, Riga will join the Alliance’s new mechanism called PURL (Priority Ukraine Requirements List) and make a financial contribution of at least 2 million euros.

This is about supporting the procurement of critically important defense systems for the Armed Forces of Ukraine — in particular, air defense systems. According to Silini, the final amount of funding from Latvia is still to be specified.

The PURL mechanism involves the creation of a special NATO fund, where partner countries can transfer funds for the purchase of weapons, mainly American-made. Ukraine forms a list of the most needed weapons, after which requests are considered by the Alliance’s military leadership. Coordination of supplies is carried out by General Alexus Hrinkiewicz, Supreme Allied Commander Europe.

Recall that last week, Denmark, Norway, and Sweden already announced a contribution of $500 million under this program.

Latvia’s joining the initiative was a logical continuation of US President Donald Trump’s call to intensify military support for Ukraine at the NATO level.

Riga’s financial participation in PURL is part of a larger and more structured approach to international assistance, allowing for a rapid response to the most urgent needs of the Ukrainian defense forces.

Recall, Norway joined the new defense initiative PURL (Priority Ukraine Requirements List) , which was launched by the United States and NATO in July of this year.

As reported, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said that the Alliance countries will continue to supply weapons to Ukraine regardless of the outcome of the meeting scheduled for August 15 between US President Donald Trump and Russian dictator Vladimir Putin. He stressed that NATO will remain committed to supporting Kyiv and will never recognize the illegal occupation of Ukrainian territories.
